Christ Church, an Episcopal parish in Lake Oswego, is looking to employ a parish sexton. A sexton is a person who is employed by the church to live on its premises, be a caretaker of the church grounds, and assist with church operations and maintenance as needed.
Christ Church is a growing community, dedicated to providing an open sanctuary for worship, reflection, education, and service for our children and all who enter. The focus of the church is to bring love and appreciation to those in our parish as well as those in need in our community.
The church hosts three Sunday services, special services such as marriages and funerals, Sunday school and youth groups, numerous groups conducting community outreach, adult education and fellowship meetings, and a preschool. The church building is in use daily during daytime and evening hours, and there is an immediate need for the services of a Sexton to help maintain and enhance the parish building and grounds.
Execute facility opening and facility closing (lockup) procedures each morning and night. This requires the Sexton to maintain a primary residence in an onsite efficiency apartment provided by the church.
Open the facilities for building events and perform projects for such events as may be assigned by the Business Manager or Parish Administrator.
Set up and clean up as needed for parish events, including returning room(s) to regular use.
Respond to all Christ Church Parish facility burglar and fire alarms utilizing the facility fire and burglar alarm procedures.
Be available by cell phone except on one day off per week.
Escort service persons and vendors as needed.
Notify approved vendors or contractors in case of an emergency involving malfunctioning facilities or systems. Notify Business Manager or Parish Administrator or Junior Warden of other needed building repair or maintenance.
Complete minor maintenance tasks at the direction of the Business Manager or Parish Administrator or Junior Warden.
Meet weekly with the designated supervisor to go over upcoming events.
Set up and take down coffee carts used by parishioners before and after Sunday morning services.
Perform smoke detector tests on the last day of each month.
Clean cigarette containers at outside doors on Thursdays.
In the event of inclement weather, salt the upper and lower parking lot building access sidewalks and Chandler Street entrance sidewalk.
Set up and operate video equipment on Sunday mornings to record the sermon given that morning, and then post it online. Oversee Audio equipment in Cummins Hall.
Graduation from high school, or completion of an equivalent degree.
Personal responsibility, integrity, and dependability.
Physical and cognitive ability to conduct routine maintenance and procedures on systems and equipment.
Flexibility to adjust schedule to unexpected facility and operations needs.
Willingness to acquire new skills as needed for evolving church functions.
Good interpersonal skills in dealing with other people.
Physically able to lift up 50 lbs.
While the Sexton is not required to be a member of the church or even a religious person, the ability to respect and accommodate the religious beliefs and practices of Church clergy, staff, and parishioners is required.
Respect for the buildings and grounds, the parishioners, and the neighborhood of Christ Church in both professional and personal dealings and actions.
SINCE THE PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION INVOLVE PERSONAL SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES, A MINIMUM OF THREE REFERENCES, AT LEAST TWO OF THEM PERSONAL REFERENCES, MUST BE PROVIDED. SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS MUST CONSENT TO A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK, A CREDIT BACKGROUND CHECK, AND A FINGERPRINT CHECK.
The Sexton will work between 10 and 19 hours of work per week for the church, at the direction of the Parish Administrator. All work hours are compensated at the rate of $14.25 per hour. The Sexton shall enjoy use of the efficiency apartment, including water, electrical, and gas utilities, at no additional cost, subject to a formal rental agreement. The Sexton shall also receive an allowance of $100 per month for purchase and maintenance of a cell phone for needed church communications. This position includes no additional benefits.
