LOSN: Interfaith Youth Sustainability Event

On March 2nd, we had our first interfaith youth sustainability event. Our own youth, Ellen Dierckes and Annabelle Hay, represented Christ Church and presented what different faiths in Lake Oswego say about sustainability. This presentation also included goals in three areas: Individual, Parish, and Collaborative. For individual, Annabelle and Ellen would like to use reusable water bottles and plastics more and also turn off lights in their homes and switch to using LED bulbs. For Christ Church, Annabelle and Ellen would like to start a food waste program where leftover food can be donated. They would also like to see reusable coffee mugs at the coffee cart instead of paper and Styrofoam cups. Lastly, for Christ Church, Annabelle and Ellen would like to implement a sustainability curriculum for all ages. For all the faith organizations in Lake Oswego, Annabelle and Ellen would like to see every parish write an Earth Day/sustainability sermon that could be published in the Lake Oswego Review. They would also like to see every parish establish a “green team” along with increased education and motivation around sustainability. Lastly, Annabelle and Ellen discussed the importance of every faith organization implementing a mission statement/pledge on sustainability.

If you see Annabelle and Ellen please wish them congratulations on helping to start this conversation regarding faith and sustainability!
